What’s next for the Victoire?
For a start, we know the expansion player distribution process begins next week, and that each existing team will be able to protect three players from expansion.
Victoire GM Danièle Sauvageau has already said she plans to protect Poulin, Stacey and goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens. That shouldn’t come as a surprise, as all three are signed with the team through the 2027-28 season, and they’ve been the foundation of this team.
Head coach Kori Cheverie will also be back after guiding the team to its first Walter Cup, Sauvageau said. Again, no surprise there.
What the team looks like beyond that is up in the air. The Victoire will certainly lose some players to the expansion teams. So many players on the team have boosted their stock through a tremendous playoff run.
By that same token, Montreal should also be a player in free agency, and there will be plenty of interesting free agents available this off-season. People want to win, and Montreal has proven that it’s a place where that can happen.
The picture will become clearer in the next few weeks, as the expansion process plays out ahead of the entry draft on June 17.
