Canadian speed skater Isabelle Weidemann was unable to repeat her 5,000-metre medal performance from the 2022 Olympics on Thursday, finishing fifth in the women’s race in Milan.
She posted a time of six minutes 50.08 seconds, a season best by 3-100ths and 3.91 seconds behind gold medallist Italy’s Francesca Lollobrigida, who also took the 3,000 on Saturday at Milano Speed Skating Stadium.
The 30-year-old Weidemann captured silver four years ago in Beijing.
Merel Conijn of the Netherlands (6:46.27) and Norway’s Ragne Wiklund (6:46.34) took silver and bronze on Thursday.
Laura Hall of Salmon Arm, B.C., placed ninth in 7:02.90.
A few hours earlier, moguls skier Mikaël Kingsbury and snowboarder Éliot Grondin captured silver for Canada’s fifth and sixth medals in Italy. The Canadian team is seeking its first gold medal, boasting three silver and three bronze.
