For a second year in a row, the Deer Lake Red Wings have won the Herder Memorial Trophy, making them the top senior hockey team in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Red Wings beat the Conception Bay South-based Baker Flooring Blues with a score of 9-6 on Sunday afternoon at the Hodder Memorial Recreation Complex in Deer Lake.

“From the first puck drop to the final buzzer …this team showed heart, grit, and what it truly means to wear the Red,” the team said in a social media post after the victory.

The team also thanked its fans as well as volunteers and supporters.

There was some controversy heading into the Herder Cup Memorial final.

Avalon East Senior Hockey League called out Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador’s three-person senior council for allowing Deer Lake to make two final additions to their roster so close to the start of Game 1.
