Will Dandjinou paces Canadian short trackers to 5-medal day at World Tour event

Will Dandjinou collected three speed skating medals Sunday for a two-day total of five, leading the Canadian team at the Short Track World Tour stop in Montreal.

He began the day with his mixed relay teammates, winning gold in the 2,000-metre race in two minutes 37.599 seconds. South Korea (2:38.004) and Poland (2:38.135) rounded out the medal podium at Maurice Richard Arena.

Later, Dandjinou of Sherbrooke, Que., led a 1-2 Canadian finish in the men’s 1,000 with Steven Dubois. Dandjinou stopped the clock in 1:25.417, 48-1000ths of a second ahead of his teammate from Laval, Que. Daeheon Hwang of South Korea took bronze (1:25.587).

Canadian Ice Maples capture mixed team relay gold at Short Track World Tour in Montreal

The Canadian Ice Maples finish first in the mixed team relay final at the ISU Short Track World Tour stop in Montreal.

In the final event of the competition, the 24-year-old Dandjinou helped Canada to victory in the men’s 5,000 relay. The Canadians posted a time of six minutes 57.743 seconds, defeating the Netherlands (6:58.372) and Italy (6:58.686).

Canada won seven gold over two days and picked up four medals on Saturday, the opening day of competition, including Dandjinou’s victories in the men’s 500 and 1,500.

Dandjinou wins 1,000m to complete sweep in Montreal, Dubois takes silver

Courtney Sarault, also coming off a two-medal performance on Saturday, added 500m silver the women’s race a day later.

The native of Moncton, N.B., crossed the finish line in 42.326 seconds, shortly after Dutch athlete Xandra Velzeboer (42.258) and ahead of American Kristen Santos-Griswold (42.429). Sherbrooke’s Kim Boutin was last in a field of five (42.542).

Courtney Sarault earns 500m silver at Short Track World Tour in Montreal

Courtney Sarault of Moncton, N.B., finishes second in the women’s 5000-metre final at the ISU Short Track World Tour stop in Montreal.

Santos-Griswold held Sarault off the podium in the women’s 1,500, earning bronze in 2:17.699. Sarault followed in 2:17.707. Choi Min-jeong went 2:17.399 to win the race.

Poland will host the third stop Nov. 20-23 before the Netherlands a week later. The world championships will also take place in Montreal in March, just a few weeks after the Olympics. A live streaming schedule is available here.
