Toronto FC have signed German midfielder Niklas Dorsch to a contract through the 2030-31 Major League Soccer season, the team announced Tuesday.

The 28-year-old joins from German club FC Heidenheim, pending his international transfer certificate and Canadian work permit.

“We are excited to welcome Niklas to Toronto,” TFC general manager Jason Hernandez said in a statement. “Niklas joins us after several seasons in strong European competition. His skillset, mentality, and work rate will be a welcome addition to our midfield. We look forward to Niklas playing a big role at the club for years to come.”

Bundesliga-tested midfielder

Dorsch has made 118 Bundesliga appearances with Bayern Munich, FC Augsburg and Heidenheim.

He also spent the 2020-21 season with Belgian first-division club Gent, recording four goals and four assists in 43 appearances across all competitions.

Dorsch earned 37 caps for Germany at the youth international level, from under-15 through under-21.

He helped Germany win the UEFA European under-21 championship in 2021
