Messi vs. Müller: a rivalry renewed
Hi there, I’m with the CBC News live pages team based in Vancouver. I’m also a lifelong soccer fan, though I prefer to call it football.
It’s been difficult to escape the fact that today’s match pits two soccer legends against each other.
Leading Miami is Argentine superstar Lionel Messi. Widely regarded as one of the best players ever, his name is spoken in the same breath as Pele and Diego Maradona.
Messi, 38, may be getting old for the sport, but his magic touch has delivered a league-leading number of goals (35) and assists (26) across the regular season and playoffs this year.
The Whitecaps, meanwhile, have Thomas Müller, the most decorated German player ever. He’s been a driving force for Vancouver since he signed with them in August, with the Caps having lost just one game since the 36-year-old arrived.
Adding further spice to this clash of titans is that the two soccer greats are far from strangers, having previously played against each other on 10 occasions for club and country — most notably in the 2014 World Cup Final, when Germany beat Argentina 1-0.
Müller has a 7-3 edge in these matchups, but that means little going into today’s game, which will be the two legends’ first meeting in MLS.
