World-record watch in men’s 400m freestyle
The race of most significance for this session does not have a Canadian competitor but I want to make sure you keep an eye out for it. The men’s 400m freestyle will be first off the blocks to start the final. Australian Sam Short dropped a 3:40.67 at their trials just a few months ago, seeming to be in his best form this season. Sam pushed the pace throughout prelims, but he turned off the jets in the last 100, likely saving his best for the final. He will be eyeing the world record mark of 3:39.96 set by Lukas Maertens of Germany last year.
Short will be challenged by his countryman who just so happens to be the reigning Commonwealth Games champion and Olympic runner up, Elijah Winnington. The 800 freestyle Olympic champion, Daniel Wiffen, is also in the mix. And don’t count out James Guy; the British star has just reintroduced the 400 freestyle back to his program after specializing in the 200 for the last decade. Buckle up, folks! At least that’s what my colleague Devin Heroux would say poolside, and I think for this one it’s warranted.
Canadian Lorne Wigginton finished 11th this morning in a time of 3:55.44.
