Canada wasted no time getting on the board at the Commonwealth Games, winning a gold and two bronze on the first day of medal competition in Glasgow, Scotland.
The gold came in gymnastics, where Felix Dolci, William Émard, Ethan Ikeda, Jordan Carroll and René Cournoyer won the men’s team event over defending champion England. Dolci, who helped Canada take silver at the 2022 Games, also placed first in qualifying for the individual all-around event.
A pair of Para swimmers took bronze, with world champion Mary Jibb reaching the podium in the women’s 200m individual medley SM10 category before Jack Gill followed suit in the men’s 100m butterfly S10.
Canada also had a great day in 3×3 wheelchair basketball, where the world-champion men’s and women’s teams both cruised to blowout victories. The men beat Kenya 16-3 as Reed De’Aeth led the way with eight points and 11 rebounds. The women trounced South Africa 19-3 with Elodie Tessier scoring 10 points and opening-ceremony flag-bearer Kady Dandeneau notching seven points and six rebounds.

Gymnastics
The women’s team final and individual qualifying take place on Saturday. Canada took bronze in the team event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and remains a medal contender with four-time Olympian Ellie Black and 16-year-old rising star Lia-Monica Fontaine on this year’s squad. Fontaine took silver in the vault at last year’s world championships, while the 30-year-old Black has won three world-championship medals and six Commonwealth Games medals in her career. Canada’s five athletes are competing in subdivision 4, which begins at 1:20 p.m. ET.
The men’s and women’s all-around finals are on Sunday at 7 a.m. ET and 1 p.m. ET, respectively. Dolci, the reigning Pan Am Games men’s champion, will try for his first solo Commonwealth gold after leading Canada to victory in the team event today and placing first in individual qualifying.
Individual apparatus finals begin on Monday — including the men’s floor (8:05 a.m.), where Dolci won silver in 2022, and Fontaine’s women’s vault (8:45 a.m. ET).
