Reyes on long journey to gold: ‘It’s great to be back here’
Kyle Reyes spoke with CBC Sports’ Marissa Papaconstantinou after winning the men’s -100 kg gold medal judo final, at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
It’s been a long road for Canada’s latest Judo champion at the Commonwealth Games.
Kyle Reyes, who made his Olympic debut at the 2016 Games in Rio, won his first Commonwealth title Sunday in the men’s -100-kilogram weight class.
“I’m very happy. It was very hard work to get here so I’m a bit relieved as well,” the 32-year-old told CBC Sports
Reyes, who was born in Brampton, Ont., but lives and trains in Tokyo, improved upon the silver he won at the 2022 edition in Birmingham, England. He started the sport at 13.
“I didn’t think I would keep on doing judo until this age but I’m managing it. I had some hard times but now I’m back here and it’s great to be back here.”
