Canadian weightlifters win bronze medals; Damian Warner leads decathlon on Day 7 of Commonwealth Games

Decathlete Damian Warner leads after 3 events

Good afternoon, sports fans! I’m a producer with CBC Sports and have your update from this morning’s track and field session at Scotstoun Stadium.

Canada’s Damian Warner will begin the evening session with a lead in the decathlon after three events held this morning. The 36-year-old from London, Ont., was the fastest in the 100-metre heats, finishing in 10.21 seconds. In the long jump, Warner’s 7.77m was second among all competitors while he was fifth in the shot put (7.77m). Warner’s total of 2,765 gives him an 80-point lead over his closest competitor, Grenada’s Lindon Victor (2,685). Warner will contest two more events today – the high jump and the 400m.

Canada’s Christopher Morales Williams did not qualify for the men’s 400m final after finishing third in his semifinal. The 21-year-old from Vaughan, Ont., ran his race in 45.99 seconds, but that time wasn’t enough for the world indoors champion to earn one of the two next-fastest qualifier spots up for grabs. Two Canadians advanced to the final of the women’s one mile. Lucia Stafford finished second in her heat in 4:31.27 while Simone Plourde qualified for Saturday’s medal race with a time of 4:38.50. Fellow Canadian Kate Current (4:39.66) did not advance.

Ottawa’s Lauren Gale qualified for the final of the women’s 400m by running 52.05 in the semifinals. Tatiana Aholou, of Laval, Que., will race in the final of the women’s 100m hurdles after running her heat in 12.91 seconds. Fellow Canadian Mariam Abdul-Rashid (12.98) did not advance.
