A star player for the Winnipeg Sea Bears basketball team is in hospital after being assaulted in downtown Winnipeg Sunday night.

Teddy Allen, 28, was taken to hospital where he is receiving medical care, the Canadian Elite Basketball Team’s spokesperson said in a news release Monday. Team officials have visited with him there, the spokesperson said.

“Our focus is on Teddy’s health and supporting him and his family,” said the release.

The Winnipeg police major crimes unit is investigating and the organization is co-operating fully, the team said. It is declining to comment further and referred questions to police.

Allen, who hails from Phoenix, Arizona, is a standout scorer and all-star for the team, and was awarded the CEBL Most Valuable Player in 2023 after leading Winnipeg to the best regular-season record ever achieved by an expansion team.
