Keeping the Walter Cup winners together was impossible.
With the PWHL expanding with four new teams next season, the league is in the middle of an expansion process that guaranteed that teams like the Montreal Victoire would have to say goodbye to some core pieces.
On Monday evening, the league announced that defender Erin Ambrose and forward Hayley Scamurra would be leaving Montreal to be part of the expansion team based in Las Vegas.
Ambrose signed a two-year deal with the Las Vegas team. Scamurra’s deal is for three years.
The other three expansion teams are in Detroit, San Jose and Hamilton.
Ambrose was the Victoire’s first-ever draft selection — the sixth overall pick in the PWHL’s inaugural draft in 2023.
After recording 16 points in 30 games with the Victoire during the regular season, Scamurra scored two goals and added two assists during the playoffs.
As part of the first phase of the league’s expansion process, the Victoire lost Nicole Gosling to the Hamilton team this past weekend.
The PWHL expansion is a multi-phase process that will continue throughout the month of June. For more details, click here.
Even Céline Dion herself sent in her congratulations to the PWHL champions, via Instagram, as 20,000 fans gathered for a victory celebration in Montreal.
