Canada’s women’s softball team secured their place at an Olympic qualifying tournament with a World Cup group stage victory on Saturday in Prague.

The Canadians beat Chinese Taipei by a score of 8-7 in nine innings at a No. 1 versus No. 2 match at the World Cup Softball Group Stage event.

The world No.4-ranked Canadians got off to a 5-0 lead after the first inning, but needed two extra innings to seal the win and claim their spot in the World Cup Finals.

Chinese Taipei will face the winner of the No. 3 versus No. 4 matchup between Italy and Australia to determine the second team from Prague to earn their way to the World Cup Finals.

That eight-team tournament begins in Redcliffe, Australia, in April of 2027, with the winner earning direct qualification for L.A. 2028. Two other group stage tournaments – in Lima and Oklahoma City – will determine four other entrants, and two wild card teams will also be selected to compete at the World Cup Finals.

The Canadian women’s team won bronze at Tokyo 2020, which was the last time softball was on the Olympic programme.
